Cloudflare experienced a significant outage this morning, causing widespread errors for many websites. These «500 Internal Server Error» messages mean their servers couldn’t process requests. Because the error is general in nature, it was difficult to pinpoint the cause and the problem lasted for over two hours.
Cloudflare has taken down the internet before
As of 9:15 am Eastern Time, we don’t yet know what’s causing these problems.
Recent issues with Cloudflare suggest a possible connection to a massive cyberattack on Microsoft Azure, potentially reaching 15 terabits per second. This attack involved around 500,000 IP addresses overwhelming Cloudflare, aiming to disrupt its services and impacting much of the internet. Interestingly, the website Bleeping Computer, which initially reported on the issue, was itself taken offline by the outage, though other platforms like X, Downdetector, and ChatGPT are now back online.
Cloudflare has experienced similar disruptions before, with significant outages occurring as far back as 2019. Previous incidents included widespread issues with major services like Amazon, Google, and Facebook, lasting a few hours. In fact, a 2019 outage affected even more websites than the one happening now, and this current disruption is also impacting popular platforms like Spotify, Canva, and League of Legends.
What this means for your favorite websites
You might notice a few things happening today, some more noticeable than others. For example, some websites may show a loading screen but never actually open, like the one shown on Bleeping Computer.
Cloudflare does more than just speed up websites; it also offers tools like checkbox and CAPTCHA challenges to block automated bots. I noticed today that many websites are using Cloudflare’s checkbox feature, and if it doesn’t load properly, it can prevent people from successfully signing in.
Even after Cloudflare is fully back online, a few websites might still experience problems. While these issues should resolve on their own over time, sites that aren’t updated often may have outdated information stored in their cache, delaying the return to normal service.
This outage highlights a key flaw in the internet
It’s clear the internet isn’t flawless, and this latest disruption follows a similar issue with Amazon Web Services recently. What’s becoming apparent is how much of the online world depends on just a handful of companies for its core infrastructure. Because of this, when one of those companies has an outage, like today, it can impact a lot of people in ways we anticipate, and also in ways we don’t.
Cloudflare sits between people visiting a website and the website’s server, storing copies of the site’s content to speed things up. However, this means all traffic has to go through Cloudflare’s servers. Today’s outage highlights a problem with this setup, particularly because Cloudflare isn’t showing any issues on its official status pages, leaving users in the dark.
I’ve built websites for more than two decades, and Cloudflare is a critical part of how the internet works. However, they really need to minimize potential failures, because when Cloudflare goes down, even for a short time, it can cause widespread disruption for everyone online.
When a website or service is unavailable, I usually check X and then Downdetector. But when both of those were also down, I found Reddit to be a surprisingly reliable source – and it doesn’t even use Cloudflare! It’s amazing Reddit is still working when so many other sites are experiencing errors.
